INTERACTIVITY
Creating interesting interactions for online learning is a fun challenge. I have had to endure my share of dull, dry eLearning modules and I really strive to make my trainings something that employees look forward to. Here are some creative landing pages and gamification created from scratch in Storyline.
The Pig Lady's Class
This online module is designed to train electricians on proper wiring techniques. The look and feel of the module reflects the cover of the client's book, Quick and Basic Electricity, and the entire module is based directly on the book. When the client teaches an in-person course, she brings a mechanical pig toy to discuss how even a simple toy can demonstrate the basic components of a circuit; so the pig became the theme. Using hotspots in the diagrams on the screen, students get to actually practice how to wire circuits together, and when clicking the hotspots in the right order, the wire gets drawn between the connectors. When done correctly, they earn pig badges as rewards that get added to their certificate that is printed after successful completion of the course. The client wanted to make a complex topic simple and fun for a clientele that may not be academically-oriented.
The Puzzle
This module was intended to identify the different professionals involved in the construction process and to demonstrate their role in the design and installation of the company's products in a cafeteria project. Each of the professionals discussed were voiced by actual employees of the company and the characters used looked similar to the employee who performed their role. This was a fun way to get the staff involved and excited about the online trainings. A construction process is much like a puzzle where everyone's role is critical to completing the finished product, so the menu page for this module was designed as a puzzle. When the puzzle piece is clicked, it snaps into the frame and reveals a black and white piece of a picture. When the module is complete, the puzzle is revealed in color and shows one of the company's most beautiful projects. This landing page was created completely from scratch.
The History Lesson
This learning module gave the employees a history of the company and how it came to be in its current state. The menu page is a library and each book represents a chapter in the company's formation, how two companies came together to provide the best of both. When a book is removed from the shelf, the status changes to "checked out" and the user lands on an open book menu with buttons representing significant inventions. Each era had it's own look and feel based on the decade covered, complete with music of the time. After completing each era, students arrive at a reception desk, where clicking on the door takes them to a learning reinforcement activity.
