Save Me Some Time!

I’ve heard it a lot lately, “But Gina…. I currently do a full-day training on this subject. Nobody would want to do a full-day of staring at a screen.” Or “Right now, we do a 5-day training… I know we couldn’t afford 40 hours of eTraining.” So let’s get to the heart of the matter: eTraining takes less time than traditional in-person learning. A lot less. Let’s examine why.

When you go to an in-person training, it’s rare to get started on time. There’s the check-in process. There’s coffee. There’s an explanation of where to find the bathrooms. There’s people who got stuck in traffic and arrive late. Most of the time, the instructor waits until the majority of students are settled before beginning the class. eTraining eliminates this wasted time.

Then there are introductions. Let’s get to know the other people in the class. I know there is value in getting to know your coworkers, but we don’t really need to do this EVERY TIME we want to learn a new skill. So eTraining eliminates this wasted time.

Good trainers will tell you that the audience can only pay attention for so long before needing a break, so they can get up and stretch. Most of the time, they’ll plan for a 10-minute break every hour (meaning 50 minutes of training). As an online trainee, you can pause your course and take a break any time you need, so eTraining eliminates this wasted time.

Don’t forget questions... You know there is always one student who needs things explained multiple times in order to understand. That means the instructor has to take the time to re-explain that concept to the entire group. Sometimes more than once. With eTraining, that student has the option to rewind and re-watch that portion of the training as needed. eTraining eliminates this wasted time.

Many instructors suffer from verbal inefficiency. They’ll tell three stories to demonstrate a concept, when one or two might do the trick. They rely on verbal fillers – ummm, er, ahh, you know – which are not only distracting, but time-wasting. eTraining is carefully planned and the scripts are edited judiciously to ensure things are explained quickly and competently. eTraining eliminates this wasted time.

And then let’s look at group discussions and practice activities. Yes, those interactions give people a chance to practice what they’re learning, but how many times do those activities go off track? How many times do the practice scripts turn into complaints about the business, or comparisons of management styles? Or even catching up on weekend events? eTraining eliminates this wasted time.

So by using carefully planned eTraining, a business can actually save A LOT of time. Your full-day training might result in one or two short online courses. Nobody will arrive late. Nobody will derail the conversation. You won’t need to provide coffee. And your course will be there in six months when you need a refresher, so you won’t need to repeat this full-day training again. Stop wasting time!
